Nespresso – with taste for sustainability

To Nespresso taste, sustainability and quality always go hand in hand. We believe that the best coffee is produced when passion, knowledge and respect for nature and people blend together. Each of our coffee varieties has not only its own exquisite taste and aroma, but also its own origin and story.

We are proud of our close collaboration with coffee farmers in the best coffee countries of the world. We are also immensely proud of our AAA Sustainability Quality Program™.

What do you have in your cup?

“More than 94% of Nespresso permanent coffees is sourced from the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program and more than 50% of all Nespresso coffee comes from farms that have achieved Rainforest Alliance certification."

Nespresso and the Rainforest Alliance have reconfigured the idea of sustainability into an own definition of Sustainable Quality: to be able to create a continuous supply of the highest quality coffee by working hand in hand with coffee farming communities.

How does it work? Through an unparalleled network of 350 in house Nespresso agronomists who work and live in the field, embedding the AAA standards into farmers’ ways of operating. Our future is tied to the future of the farmers, so Nespresso partner with them in a journey of continuous improvement, the reach and likes of which is absolutely best-in-class.

Adapting and supporting where it is needed

The Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program works together with farmers to identify the most efficient and natural way of working with the land and addressing both environmental and social aspects. The variables change across different countries, so the program is adapted accordingly.

“We have invested the additional income we have gained through the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program in our farm, in our children’s education, and in the livelihood of our family and that of our workers."

Olga Lucía Otero, AAA farmer in Colombia since 2006

As an example, agroforestry is today a critical area in many geographical regions. Since 2014 we planted more than 3.5 million trees in countries including Guatemala, Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia, Kenya and Indonesia.

A gateway to new possibilities

In addition to participating in the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program many farmers strive to reach the Rainforest Alliance certification.

The combination of AAA- program and Rainforest Alliance certification benefits the farmers by investing in community infrastructures, paying premiums for superior coffee, and encouraging best agricultural practices. It also provides farmer training, financing, and technical assistance to continuously improve quality, sustainability, and productivity.

Single Origins – the perfect taste of land and beans

Have you tried our Single Origins yet? Origins is a range of single origin coffees brought from local coffee producers in different parts of the world; India, Guatemala, and Brazil.

They really capture the soul of the region, the craftmanship of the farmers and our philosophy around sustainability. The distinctive and unique aromas of these coffees are linked to the countries of origin, as well as to the specific ways of cultivating, harvesting and processing coffee, carefully done by local farming communities.

In each cup you get a sublime reminiscence of the specific terroir where the beans were grown and the close care they got from the farmers.

Single Origin Peru – the first organic Nespresso coffee

Three of our four Single Origins are sourced in a sustainable way from The AAA program: Guatemala, Brazil, and India. The fourth one, Peru, is the first organic Nespresso coffee.

It is a wonderful, versatile and floral coffee, with fruity aroma, that grows high up into the slopes of the Andes, in the region of Huabal in North-East Peru. Perfect to enjoy both as an Espresso and as a Lungo.

Peru Organic is certified organic, meaning that it is produced by methods complying with the standards of organic farming. While standards vary worldwide, organic farming broadly features practices that cycle resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity.

Our new coffee meets the requirements set by Bio-Inspecta (Swiss Certification Body/Auditor CH – BIO-006), an EU Certification that is also recognized by USA authorities.

When will Origin Peru fit the AAA program requirements?

Implementing the AAA-program takes time because of our high levels of quality and sustainability standards. For this year we were unable to source all the high-quality organic coffee needed. So, while we continue to build the long-term program, for the 2020 harvest we will also be sourcing organic certified coffee from other regions in Peru. Our ambition is that by 2021 all Peru organic coffee will be sourced from our new AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program.

Will Nespresso launch more organic coffees in the future?

Creating organic coffees is not a simple process for farmers, because of the investment required in the farms and the certification practice. It usually takes around 3 years to transition to organic farming. This often means that farmers have to significantly reduce their incomes while their farms go through the required cycles. Something that is often out of reach for many.

Through the AAA program Nespresso work directly with 100,000 farmers, rather than sourcing the coffee through the open market. It is through these relationships that the AAA program have created sustainable high-quality coffees that are benefiting communities throughout the world.

As new opportunities for further organic coffees are explored, the focus is to develop these with the existing coffee farmers, examining where it makes financial sense for them. All to ensure that not only the coffee, but also the relationships, continue to grow in the best possible way.

From farm to cup, the challenge is to protect and keep all the intense flavour that comes from the rich aroma of those grounds grown with respect.

At the very end of this sustainable supply chain when you enjoy great coffee, think about Sustainable Quality and how these two words help ensure that the beans have been produced with the greatest of care for the environment, farm workers, their families and farming communities.
